Simon Eve

MBACP (Accred) Counsellor

People often come to counselling knowing that something is not right, but without knowing exactly what the problem is or how to change it. You do not need to arrive with everything neatly worked out. Sometimes having the opportunity to speak openly, without judgement, is where understanding and change begin.

I offer online counselling to adults experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, loss, low self-esteem, stress, shame and the effects of difficult or traumatic experiences. I also have extensive specialist experience of working with gambling-related harm, addiction and other compulsive behaviours, including the impact these can have on relationships, emotional wellbeing and everyday life.

My approach is integrative, which means I draw upon different therapeutic ideas according to the person and situation rather than expecting everyone to fit one particular model. I see counselling as a collaborative conversation. You bring your experience and knowledge of your own life; I bring more than twenty-five years of therapeutic experience, careful attention and a willingness to stay alongside you while we explore what is happening.

Understanding the past can be important, but insight alone does not always create change. Our work can also involve recognising patterns, considering different possibilities and finding practical ways to begin living differently. I will not tell you who you should be or what decisions you should make, but I can help you understand what may be keeping you stuck and support you in finding a way forward that feels genuinely your own.

I have lived a bit myself and know that life rarely follows a tidy path. There is very little that cannot be talked about usefully.

Experience

I have worked therapeutically with adults for more than twenty-five years across private practice, NHS primary care, Employee Assistance Programmes and specialist addiction services.

My early professional experience was within residential drug and alcohol treatment, where I worked with people experiencing addiction alongside complex emotional, relational and practical difficulties. This gave me a lasting understanding of recovery as a process that involves far more than simply stopping a particular behaviour.

I have subsequently provided both brief and longer-term counselling through private practice and workplace wellbeing services, supporting people with anxiety, depression, stress, bereavement, relationship difficulties, trauma, low self-esteem and significant periods of change or uncertainty.

A substantial part of my recent work has been within specialist gambling services. I currently provide individual counselling and facilitate a weekly therapeutic group as part of an NHS primary-care gambling service. This work includes supporting people affected by compulsive gambling, addiction and recovery, as well as the shame, secrecy, relationship difficulties and emotional distress that can accompany them.

I am experienced in providing counselling online and have worked remotely with clients from a wide range of backgrounds and locations. Throughout my career, I have worked collaboratively with other professionals and services where appropriate, including around safeguarding, risk and clients with more complex needs.
