Jack Gourlay

Adv Dip Psych · MBACP Psychotherapist and Counsellor

I’m Jack, a BACP-registered psychotherapist working with adults experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties.

People come to therapy for many different reasons. You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, grief, burnout, or a significant life transition. Perhaps you feel stuck in repeating patterns, uncertain about the future, or increasingly disconnected from yourself and those around you. Sometimes life appears to be going well on the surface, but something doesn’t feel quite right.

My approach is humanistic and relational, informed by integrative psychotherapy training. I try not to hide behind a professional role or complicated language, but to offer a genuine, thoughtful relationship in which you can feel comfortable being yourself.

Sessions are conversational and collaborative, and people I’ve worked with have told me they feel safe and at ease. There’s no pressure to know exactly where to begin or to have all the answers. Together, we take time to explore your feelings, relationships and the patterns that may be shaping your life.

I’m interested in looking beyond the labels we sometimes carry about ourselves and understanding what it’s really like to be you. This might mean making sense of difficult feelings, experiences from the past, or ways of relating to yourself and others that no longer seem to be working.

I bring warmth, curiosity, honesty and thoughtful challenge to our work. Rather than trying to fix or judge what you’re going through, I aim to help you make sense of it. This can lead to practical changes, a different perspective, or greater compassion for yourself.

I work with people facing immediate difficulties, as well as those exploring questions of identity, self-worth, meaning and life direction. You don’t need to be in crisis to begin therapy. Sometimes the wish to understand yourself more deeply is a great place to start.

Experience

I currently work in private practice, offering psychotherapy and counselling to adults in person and online.

My clinical experience includes several hundred hours of supervised therapeutic work across two placements in the South East of England, supporting people with a wide range of emotional, relational and psychological difficulties.

My professional training includes an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy and a Diploma in Counselling at The Link Centre in Sussex, a UKCP-accredited training centre. My approach draws on humanistic, relational and transactional analysis perspectives, supported by regular clinical supervision and continuing professional development.

Before becoming a therapist, I spent over two decades working as a musician, songwriter and producer, collaborating closely with artists in the recording studio. Much of this work involved listening to people’s stories, understanding their perspectives and helping them find ways to express themselves.

Looking back, I can see parallels between these two professions. Both involve trust, collaboration, creativity and a willingness to explore without knowing exactly where things might lead. Working with people from a wide range of backgrounds also taught me the value of finding connection through difference.

This background continues to inform my work as a psychotherapist, particularly my interest in identity, relationships, creativity, uncertainty and change. I value the opportunity to meet people as individuals, to understand their different perspectives and to work alongside them in exploring what matters most.
