Imogen Mayhew
MBACP, BA (Hons) and DipHe
Are you a woman looking for friendly, non-judgemental support? I am a person-centred therapist specialising in female mental health, especially suicidal thoughts and self-harm. I fuse in-depth talking therapy with directive psychological strategies.
If you have been frustrated in the past by people who try to put you in a box, I will give you space to breathe without judging you. I see being a therapist as being like a guide, supporting you on the journey you are taking towards who you truly are. Using my skills and experience, I can meet you in the darkness and help you make sense of things.
I practice person-centred therapy, an approach founded by the humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers that prioritises empathy, acceptance and authenticity. Rogers wrote: “To achieve a close, intimate, real, fully communicative relationship with another person seems to meet a deep need in every individual.” I embrace this relational way of working.
Experience
I have been a counsellor for the agencies Lifetime Therapy and Counselling for Social Change, working with clients referred to me from Georgia’s Voice and The Pearl Exchange support groups. I also have experience as an education mentor, group facilitator and crisis counsellor with the charities Mental Health Innovations, The Bigger Picture, Coach Bright and Exeter Care Homes Reading Project. I now work exclusively in private practice.
