Fiona Clifton

BSc (Hons) MBACP Counsellor

My approach to counselling is integrative, which means that I am trained in a number of theories, and can draw on these different approaches to meet your individual needs.

Whatever it is you are struggling with, my aim is to build up a genuine and warm relationship with you. When we explore your issues together, you will gain an increased level of self awareness, greater clarity and understanding. In counselling you will have your difficulties heard and acknowledged and together we can explore their origins and think about what you want for the future.

My focus is on you as the client, and I believe that you are the expert in your own world. I’m not going to direct you or lead you, but I’m going to follow you on your journey, exploring your feelings. Together, we’re going to make sense of what your issues are, so that you can move forward in your life. Within the safe, non-judgemental and confidential environment of our counselling session, we will explore the issues which have brought you to therapy. By doing so, we may begin to understand how you can develop your own personal resources and move on and change your patterns of behaviour. Our sessions will focus on your journey, and how you can use our time together in order to move forwards. Using an approach which includes bodily sensations, emotions and mind, my aim is to support you in making positive and lasting changes that will enhance your life.
I can see you on a short term or long term basis depending on your needs. I will always work at your pace and stay alongside you on your counselling journey.

As a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), I abide by their ethical framework and am committed to regular and ongoing professional training and development.

I offer a free 30 minute zoom or telephone consultation where we will have the opportunity to discuss any questions and to get a sense of how we may work together.

For an initial discussion and to book a session, please send me an email.

Experience

Alongside my private work, I have worked for a counselling charity organization, in which I have helped a large range of different people, from diverse backgrounds, ages and socio-economic groups. I work as a family support counsellor at a local children and young person’s hospice supporting family members following the loss of their loved one. I have experience of working with bereavement and loss, trauma, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, anger, addictions, adverse childhood experiences and relationship difficulties among other issues.

I have also worked with the Samaritans as a listening volunteer, in which role I helped people in crisis with a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety and family-based problems. In addition, I have experience working as a counsellor in a local sixth form college with young people. This built on my years of experience as a teacher in both primary and secondary schools. As a parent myself, I understand the unique challenges which young people face, and which parents and relatives must navigate alongside them.
