MBACP (Accred.) Counsellor

Counselling offers a breathing space – a warm and supportive place to be heard and understood, whatever you are facing. By making sense of your feelings and experiences in therapy, you will give yourself the opportunity to move forwards feeling happier, stronger and better able to cope with life.

My clients seek support with a variety of issues including bereavement, grief and loss; stress, anxiety and depression; trauma and abuse; relationship and parenting difficulties; infertility; midlife; illness; and end of life. I also provide sessions for counselling students working towards qualification.

My approach takes into account your past experience and relationships and how these may impact on the present, as well as an understanding that difficult feelings can be repressed by our conscious minds when they are too painful for us to process. These buried or unconscious feelings, however, can still drive our behaviour, leading to a sense we are not really in control of our lives or are caught-up in repeated patterns of unhelpful behaviour. Drawing on this foundation will enable you to develop greater self-awareness, a crucial part of successful therapy.

We are all different and an initial conversation (on the phone or in person) is an opportunity to find out more before going ahead, to think through what you are hoping for from counselling, and how we can work best together. I offer both open-ended and time-limited therapy, and we will work at whatever pace feels right for you.

Appointments are currently available in-person at The Eaves in Guildford (daytime availability only)

Experience

I have 10 years’ experience of working with individuals (18+), and currently work both in private practice and as a volunteer with Cruse Bereavement Care. I have experience of counselling within charitable organisations and working on telephone helplines. I have also worked as a student skills mentor and Professional and Personal Development Group facilitator for a Sussex-based counselling and training agency.

Before training as a counsellor, I worked for over 20 years as a commissioning editor for both UK and US book publishers, specialising in popular psychology, health, self-help, mindfulness and parenting titles. The opportunity to work with many leading experts in these areas has usefully fed into my practice as a therapist.
