Amita Doshi

BSc (Hons), MBCAP

My background training is Humanistic meaning I work collaboratively with you, the client, being the expert on yourself – there is no hierarchy in the counselling room. The first sessions will centre around building the foundations of a trusting relationship in which you can feel safe whilst exploring your feelings and emotions and how you relate to the world around you. I aim to provide this secure environment using three key elements – empathy, non-judgment and honesty. Your sessions will be led by you dictating the depth of feelings you wish to go and the pace at which we travel.

I will work as channel through which you can begin to take your first tentative steps towards self-awareness and self-acceptance. I will walk hand in hand with you through each session and endeavour to help you to help yourself by communicating with you using unpretentious language in a down to earth way.

I have a genuine willingness to understand the unique experience of you. In showing this willingness to explore your world without judgement, I hope you will have the courage to explore parts of yourself that may have, in the past, been too difficult to approach. There may be sessions with a serious tone but also room for humour.

Experience

Some of the issues you may struggle with overlap and cannot be pigeon-holed into a specific category. My practice has the flexibility and fluidity to take this into account.

Underneath my therapeutic qualification is a human being with feelings and emotions. I have a wealth of personal experience which enhances my professional world. In the last 20+ years, I have supported many people going through the most difficult times of their life including..

  • Relationship issues
  • Co-dependency
  • Anxiety and/or depression
  • Loss through bereavement, divorce or a relationship breakdown
  • Age related cognition and/or mobility decline
  • Addiction and surviving life in recovery

In addition to my private practice, I continue to work as a voluntary counsellor for a low-cost agency. This ensures I commit to a personal philosophy of therapy being available to everyone.

I know how daunting it can be to take the first steps in contacting a stranger yet knowing asking for help. With this in mind, I offer a free 30-minute online or phone call consultation. This will give us both an opportunity to assess if we can work together – to see if we are a good fit. After your initial consultation, we can confirm your first face-to-face session.

Training, qualifications & experience

  • My counselling qualification comes from graduating from a BSc (Hons) Humanistic Counselling degree at the Metanoia Institute in London
  • The combination of studying at this well-regarded training facility and choosing a BACP recognised course, ensures I am thoroughly trained to the highest standard. I am continually adding to my journey of knowledge and experience though regular CPD’s and group work.
  • The three modalities that make up the Humanistic training are Person Centred (PC), Transactional Analysis (TA) and Gestalt. However, I also have experience in using the tools of CBT and Solution Focussed therapy where appropriate
  • The BACP’s Ethical Framework and guidelines underpin my work thus ensuring your well-being is first and foremost throughout our sessions.
