Clare Carter
(MBACP) Dip HE Integrative Counselling
Hello, and thank you for visiting my profile.
Life can be challenging, and at times it can feel overwhelming—whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, or simply feeling stuck. Perhaps you’re facing a difficult time of transition, facing bereavement or coping with loss. Whatever has brought you here, I want to reassure you that you don’t have to face it alone.
I am a qualified integrative counsellor offering a warm, non-judgemental, and compassionate space where you can feel safe to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences at your own pace. My approach is grounded in empathy and respect, and I will walk alongside you as you begin to understand yourself more deeply.
Counselling can help you make sense of difficult emotions, explore the roots of patterns or behaviours that no longer serve you, and begin to connect with what truly matters to you. Through this process, you may find clarity, relief, and the confidence to move forward in a way that feels more aligned with your needs and values.
What might I expect from my sessions?
As an integrative counsellor, I draw on a blend of different therapeutic approaches to suit your individual needs and requirements. Working holistically, we will begin by looking at what’s going on for you right now, noticing the whole person, mind, body and spirit. Should you choose, we will take time to explore and reflect on your past experiences, noticing how these may have affected and be continuing to affect the present.
From this place of greater self- awareness, you will be supported in making changes that align with what is important to you.
Together, we can explore your experiences in a space where you are truly heard and supported.
Do I need to be good at talking about my feelings?
Not at all. We all have different ways of processing and expressing ourselves, and finding the right words may not always feel easy. In our sessions, I offer a variety of creative and exploratory techniques to gently support emotional expression and insight. This can include guided imagery, inner child work, drawing, sand play, or the use of pictures to name just a few.
You don’t need to be artistic or creative—just open to being curious. Together, we can gently explore and expand your awareness in a way that feels comfortable, with the aim of deepening understanding and opening up the possibility for change.
Do I need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling?
No. Counselling can be helpful whether you’re facing a crisis, feeling stuck, or simply seeking greater self-awareness and personal growth. You may want space to reflect on life’s direction, work through a decision, or come to terms with something difficult.
The safe space we create together is yours to bring as much or as little as you feel ready to.
What might be my next step?
Choosing a counsellor you feel comfortable with is an important part of your counselling process. If you’ve read this far and feel we might be a good fit, why don’t we have a free 20-minute telephone or Zoom call. We can talk through what has brought you to counselling and what you hope to gain from it. You will have the chance to ask any questions and get a feel for how I work. This will help you decide whether this is the right path—and the right fit—for you. The call is free of charge with no obligation to continue.
If you would like to continue, we can then arrange your ongoing regular sessions.
If you’re considering taking the next step, I welcome you to reach out.
How many sessions will I need?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some clients benefit from short-term work (6–12 sessions), while others prefer to work on a longer-term or open-ended basis. Typically, the first month gives us a good sense of whether therapy with me feels right for you.
In our third session, we’ll check in on how things are going—what’s felt helpful, what might not be working, and whether you’d like to continue. We’ll continue to review and adapt our sessions regularly to ensure they remain aligned with your evolving needs and goals.
Are the sessions confidential?
Yes. I am a registered member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy), and I work in accordance with the BACP’s Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions. This means everything you share in our sessions is treated with the utmost confidentiality, with a few legal exceptions that I will explain clearly at the outset.
Experience
I bring to my practice over thirty years of experience in the caring professions. My background includes working as an NHS dietitian as well as working within the education sector to support young people on the autistic spectrum. I currently volunteer as a counsellor for adults at a local charity.
My therapeutic work has involved supporting adult clients facing a range of challenges, including anger, anxiety, depression, bereavement and loss, chronic illness, life transitions, low self-esteem, neurodivergence, stress, shame, trauma, and spiritual concerns.
I also bring lived experience of ME/CFS and neurodivergence, which informs my work with sensitivity and understanding. I have a particular interest in the mind-body connection and how this relationship can support healing and growth.
