Afirah Azmi

BSc (Hons), Adv Dip, MBACP (Accred) Integrative Psychotherapist | Trauma & Addiction Specialist | EMDR & Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

I have over 20 years experience as a Psychotherapist with helping to treat various conditions and presentations. I am a BACP Accredited Integrative Psychotherapist and work with a multitude of clients from all backgrounds and presenting life problems. I have especially addressed the problems faced by individuals suffering with trauma, the cycle of substance misuse often leading to isolation from families, friends and other support structures. In severe instances, stemming from dysfunctional and/or destructive familial and interpersonal relationships, dual diagnosis clients, and childhood abuse.

I work in the private sector with clients through direct referrals or other private organisations.

My aim is to promote emotional and psychological wellbeing to each individual I see, through the use of various modalities, including Integrative approaches, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing.

We all go through difficulties in life and get through somehow, however often the quality of our lives and relationships are diminished by unaddressed internal and external conflicts that can leave us stuck. I believe wholeheartedly that for a human being to thrive – not only survive – we all need only one witness who can understand and explore our story, our patterns, our beliefs and perhaps if needed re-evaluate that in an authentic non-judgemental and safe space.

I have seen this to be true in my work with clients and watched people transform in front of me and finding meaning where it may have been marred by challenges and difficulties. The most important relationship we have is with ourselves however, often that can be very difficult to resolve and work through alone, so often it takes a back seat and can be incredibly debilitating despite the face one can put out and show to the rest of the world, whilst struggling internally.

I see various clients around the world, mostly successful high functioning professionals and individuals both male and female, who have either lost their way in some aspect of their lives and feel conflicted. This could be work related, family and intimate relationships, unprocessed trauma and various addictions to name a few.

The ability to build trusting relationships with people and to walk through someone’s journey and see how resilient people have been. Whilst helping each person feel empowered by their choices and rebuild trust within themselves. To offer someone the space that they may need to share and explore reoccurring thoughts and emotions, as well as difficult and complex life situations and human processes, whilst seeing transformation occur and hope return. This is a privilege to be a part of such a personal journey towards positive change and healing.

Often habitual patterns, maladaptive behaviours and faulty core belief systems leave people in psychological and emotional turmoil.

So often feeling completely isolated or detached form others, due to various life circumstances, past and present that have been left unresolved to the point of either coping or complete unmanageability. This creates stress which often leads a decreased quality of life and health complications. Often childhood attachments and traumas are unresolved and prevents the individual from moving forward in their lives.

The misconception about psychotherapy is that an individual needs to either be completely broken and just able cope with their internal struggles to seek help. However, psychotherapy is actually about the client wanting to explore, address and change the negative impact of things within themselves and the way they relate to others. Such as self-worth, loneliness, lack of confidence, fear, love, relationships, work stress, addictions, self-esteem and other things that maybe difficult to talk to friends, colleagues or family about. This often prevents one from asking for help.

By being willing to face, address and overcome these difficulties and by building an authentic therapeutic alliance/relationship. To grow through life’s problems and manage life with a new perspective, with understanding and without judgement in a way that perhaps was never before deemed possible, is in itself a priceless gift. To see clients work through, process, change, overcome and flourish in a ways they choose for themselves, is a human gift that someone can gift themselves. Healthy human interactions have an immense impact on the neurobiology of the brain based on early childhood attachments and has a profound impact in how things are managed in adult life.

Therapy is much more than just talking, it is about changing the very core internal conflicts, which reduce the quality of a person’s human experience. It is possible to make sense of and overcome the most difficult life events by managing memories and emotions in a different way. As well as changing maladaptive coping mechanisms that are no longer working, to enhance all relationships. We all have something that we can grow through and learn from and the realisation of how we may minimise something that has directed the entire course of our life and our relationships. This understanding can be incredibly freeing and the journey does not need to be travelled alone.

I work from a real and reparative standpoint with understanding, compassion and empathy. Relationships are the core of a healthy life balance and often that begins with our relationship with self. To understand, be able to explore deeply and work through deeply imbedded conscious and subconscious belief systems, behavioural patterns, overcome conditioning, in order to realise future hopes and goals for a more fulfilled life.

You are welcome to contact me in order to explore your needs and hopes for life. We would work on the areas you would like to explore, understand, overcome or heal.

Experience

I trained at the University of Southampton and studied Integrative Psychotherapy and the University of Bath where I received a 1st class honours degree in Addictions Counselling. Both were excellent universities to study in. I practice integrative psychotherapy, which has many different tools, methods and models. This includes: psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, interpersonal psychotherapy, as well as other approaches and theories. This gives me a wide scope of tools without having to be purist in one discipline only. I am able to offer what works best for the presenting client. I have found this to be extremely helpful for the clients I work with and have seen results and transformative changes with trauma patients, childhood abuse, relationships, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem and self-worth. It is also helpful to explore with self-sufficient, high functioning professionals about very complex ideas, beliefs and ingrained patterns that are no longer working and the client wishes to change.

I have also completed Level 1 training for Sensorimotor Psychotherapy which is useful for traumatised and dissociative clients which is based on the neurobiological model of trauma, linking implicit memory and difficult experiences to the brain in conjunction with the individuals’ physical, emotional and psychological responses.

I am an EMDR Practitioner which helps people process so many of lifestyle challenges.
