Dr Alice Coulson
DClinPsy, MSc, BA (Hons) Clinical Psychologist
I’m a Clinical Psychologist with a background across NHS, charity and research settings. I work with adults aged 16 and over who feel stuck, worn down, or quietly not okay – whether that’s anxiety, depression and OCD, grief, trauma, burnout, or something harder to name.
Most people get to therapy after sitting with something difficult for a while. There’s no right time, and you don’t need to have it all worked out before we speak. Things can and do get better, even when they’ve felt stuck for a long time.
My approach draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) and systemic thinking – looking at the relationships and wider patterns in your life, not just what’s going on inside. As a Clinical Psychologist I’m trained in several different types of therapy, not just one, which means the therapy shapes itself around you, not the other way round. Whichever approach we use, the aim of therapy isn’t to get rid of difficult feelings, it’s to carry them more lightly, so they no longer run you.
I don’t take what people carry into therapy lightly, often things held for a long time and sometimes things never quite said out loud. My aim is for you to feel genuinely understood, and safe enough to say what’s hardest to say, so together we can work out what’s going on and start to move through it.
Sessions are honest and unhurried, led by what’s right for you. Some people come for a shorter, focused piece of work, while others need more time. I’ll always be upfront about how things are going and about when it feels right to end.
If you’re thinking about reaching out, however unsure you might feel about it, I’d love to hear from you. You can email me at alice@sottopsychology.co.uk.
Areas I work with include anxiety, birth and bonding, bullying, cancer and serious illness, chronic illness and pain, depression, grief (including anticipatory grief and bereavement), health anxiety, life transitions, loneliness, low self-esteem, OCD, panic attacks, parenting support, perfectionism, phobias, relationship difficulties, shame and guilt, sleep difficulties, social anxiety, stress and burnout, trauma and PTSD, and work-related difficulties.
