Reinhart Burger
HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist (Clinical Psychology)
I am a Clinical Psychologist offering outpatient psychological assessment and therapy for adults. With over a decade of experience across neurorehabilitation, trauma services, and veterans’ mental health, I work with people experiencing emotional, psychological, or cognitive difficulties — particularly where these are shaped by trauma, neurological injury or illness, or significant life events.
My approach is formulation based and collaborative. This means we work together to develop a shared understanding of your difficulties — how they developed, what may be maintaining them, and how they are affecting your life. This understanding guides any therapeutic work, helping to keep it focused, evidence based, and meaningful to you.
I tend to work best with people who are ready to engage thoughtfully with their difficulties and who are interested in understanding patterns and working towards lasting change.
How I work
We usually begin with an initial assessment appointment to explore what has brought you to seek support, what you are hoping for, and whether working together feels like a good fit. If it appears that another service would be better placed to help, I will say so openly and support you to think through appropriate next steps.
Psychological assessment and formulation are central to my practice. Where clinically useful, this may include psychological or standardised cognitive assessment — for example following stroke, neurological illness, or a long term health condition, or where there is a wish for greater clarity about cognitive or psychological functioning. Assessment can help identify patterns of cognitive strength and difficulty, clarify the impact of change on everyday life, and inform practical ways of adapting, coping, or moving forward.
My therapeutic work is trauma informed and draws on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Therapy for PTSD (CT PTSD), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and neuropsychologically informed approaches. I work at a pace that prioritises safety, collaboration, and clarity.
Areas I commonly work with
• Psychological trauma and its longer term impact, including PTSD
• Anxiety, depression, and stress related difficulties
• Adjustment following brain injury, stroke, neurological illness, or medical trauma
• Changes in thinking, memory, or everyday functioning following neurological illness or injury
• Difficulties with identity, confidence, or relationships following injury or trauma
My trauma experience includes extensive work with military veterans, alongside work with members of the general public affected by trauma, including violent crime and serious accidents.
Neuropsychology and cognitive difficulties
My neuropsychologically informed work focuses on understanding the real world impact of cognitive changes — such as difficulties with attention, memory, planning, fatigue, or emotional regulation — and how these affect daily life, work, and relationships. This may involve identifying patterns that help explain recent changes, supporting adjustment to cognitive difficulties, and guiding practical strategies to manage their impact day to day.
I do not provide assessments for ADHD, autism, or other neurodevelopmental conditions, nor do I provide reports for legal, occupational, appeal, or other third party decision making purposes.
Who this service is for
I work with adults who are seeking psychological support voluntarily — that is, of their own accord rather than to meet an external requirement — and who are able to engage safely in weekly outpatient or online therapy.
This service is unlikely to be the right fit if you are currently experiencing a mental health crisis, are at immediate risk of harm, or are managing severe substance dependence. In these situations, your GP, local NHS urgent mental health services, or emergency services are better placed to help. If there is any uncertainty about whether this service is suitable, I am happy to advise briefly before an appointment is booked.
Experience
I have held senior clinical roles in services specialising in neurorehabilitation, trauma, and veterans’ mental health. My work has included supporting adults adjusting to brain injury, neurological conditions, trauma, and major life changes, alongside providing cognitive assessment, rehabilitation, and trauma-focused therapy.
Before moving into private practice, I worked in charity-based services delivering psychological therapy, neuropsychological assessment, and rehabilitation within multidisciplinary teams. I have extensive experience working with military personnel, veterans, and individuals affected by accidents, assaults, and long-term health conditions.
