Last Saturday, The Eaves hosted a CPD session for our practitioners at the Farnham practice, led by Emily Bristow, an experienced counsellor with expertise in supporting addiction recovery in prison environments. Emily is based in Guildford and Farnham seeing clients on Thursday evenings and Friday mornings.
Emily’s presentation, Working with Addiction Recovery in Prison, provided an insight into the unique challenges and triumphs of offering therapy in a non-therapeutic setting.
Therapy in a Non-Therapeutic Environment
Prisons present an unconventional backdrop for therapy. Emily highlighted how balancing the rigid dynamics of the prison system with the therapeutic needs of clients requires creativity, resilience, and exceptional communication skills.
Key Takeaways from the Presentation
Emily shared several aspects of working within this context:
• Language and Terminology: Understanding and using the right language to connect with and respect clients.
• The 12 Steps Approach: The structured framework often central to recovery journeys, providing a foundation for self-reflection and growth.
• Role of the Counsellor: Supporting clients to re-engage with their sense of self beyond addiction.

This CPD session was not only informative but inspiring, providing therapists with practical insights and strategies for working in complex environments.
