This Supervision Diploma is designed to enable you to practice as an effective and ethical Supervisor. The tutor team believe in the importance of good supervision and considers it vital that Counsellors wishing to provide supervision should acquire the additional skills necessary for supervision. In addition, students will need to complete external practice hours working as a Supervisor. This course is designed for you to be able to work with supervisees from many disciplines and is not linked to any one model of counselling. A variety of ways of presenting material will be used throughout the course.
Course Structure and Assessment Process
The Course structure follows the core elements outlined in the BACP Supervision Competence Framework and detailed in the BACP Counselling and Psychotherapy Supervision Training Curriculum. During the Course, you will be presented with a variety of models/theories of Counselling Supervision with the aim of you considering them and developing your ideas as to how you wish to work.
The course will seek to model good practice in the establishment of collegiate relationships. We trust our way of working will provide a good example to our students.
Please note: Students are responsible for purchasing their own text books. A reading list is included for your guidance.
Whilst on the Course students will need to be working as a Supervisor with a minimum of 2 individuals (not seen as a pair) or 1 individual and one group and complete at least 20 hours of Supervision practice. Trainee supervisors must be supervising counsellors or other professionals for whom supervision would be appropriate.
Students will need to receive a minimum of 1 hour of monthly personal Counselling supervision support for their supervision work, provided by a suitably qualified supervisor.
Personal Study Students will need to commit a minimum of 2/3 hours a week, approximately 15 hours a month, in personal study, assignment preparation and background reading. This, together with the course hours, supervision skills practice and personal supervision will equate to over 200 hours of training at Post Qualification Diploma Level
The two major assignments are a Philosophy essay explaining your beliefs about supervision and how you wish to work having considered a variety of models and a case study showing how you work.
