Autism and Asperger’s – ASD
Autism and Asperger Syndrome (also known as Autistic Spectrum Disorder – ASD) affects 1 in 10 people in fact there are 700,000 people on the autism spectrum in the UK today according to the NAS (National Autistic Society). And that figure doesn’t take into account the others affected, parents, partners, children etc. and without understanding, autistic people and families are at risk of being isolated and developing more severe mental health problems.
As a ‘hidden disability’ it is not always easy to identify ASD as many autistic and people with Asperger’s can go on to lead very successful lives. Five times as many males as females are diagnosed with autism and nearly half of autistic people do not have learning difficulties.
ASD – CHILDREN
While autism is incurable, the right support at the right time can make an enormous difference to children’s’ lives. Children, when supported in school and at home can learn coping mechanisms and how to adapt behaviours to make life a bit easier for them. ASD is a wide and varied spectrum and can change through time meaning there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to counselling autistic children. Family therapy, art therapy, play therapy, even ‘out and about’ socialisation therapy can all play a part in helping young people deal with the pressure of trying to operate in a world that is different from their own.
At The Eaves we can work with families and children with anger issues, socialisation problems, relationship and sibling difficulties. Many of our psychologists and counsellors have previously worked for the NHS and with CAMHS and are registered with the major private healthcare providers.
Please not we do not offer diagnosis, statements or medication. We can help with assessments, school and GP reports.
ASD – ADULTS
Autistic adults don’t just appear, they were autistic children before that. Many but the very autistic children people in the early days of diagnosis, slipped through the net. Late diagnosis of ASD is on the increase and more of our therapists than ever are trained to help this growing sector of society to accept and understand their diagnosis and how to integrate it into their lives. Often a diagnosis can be a relief as ASD has often long been suspected but there is also benefit to working without a diagnosis as practical and emotional help is always a help.
Specialist couples counselling can play a big part in helping couples for whom ASD can cause difficulties in their relationships.
