Burnout Report: 1 in 5 needed to take time off work due to stress in the past year

Mental Health UK has released its annual benchmark report on burnout in the UK, revealing that one in five working adults had to take time off work in the past year due to poor mental health caused by pressure or stress. The report calls for a national summit on employment and mental health to address the increasing levels of work-related stress and burnout.

The report highlights alarming statistics, with over a third (35%) of adults experiencing high or extreme levels of stress frequently throughout the year. These findings underscore the urgent need for employers to take proactive steps in supporting their workforce and fostering a healthier work environment.

Key Findings from the Burnout Report:

  • 20% of workers took time off due to stress-related mental health issues.
  • 35% of employees do not feel comfortable discussing stress with their managers.
  • 49% of workers say their employer lacks a plan to address chronic stress and burnout.
  • The top workplace stressors include high workload (54%), unpaid overtime (45%), and feelings of isolation (42%).
  • Cost-of-living pressures are also contributing to workplace stress, with 38% of workers taking on additional work to manage financial difficulties.

Despite these challenges, the report suggests that key strategies such as a healthy work-life balance, supportive managers, and mental health initiatives can help mitigate burnout and stress.
