Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder that affects the chemical dynamics in the brain in both children and adults across the globe. It is diagnosed two to three times more in males than females, approximately affects 11% of school age children, and three quarters of people with ADHD continue to experience symptoms into adulthood. (*)
It is usually characterised by: –
- Varying levels of inattention
- Hyperactivity
- Lack of concentration in things that they hold little interest in
- Impulsivity
- Forgetfulness
- Difficulty keeping quiet and speaking out of turn
- Extreme impatience
ADHD awareness month looks to raise awareness and to educate people on the facts of ADHD—symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment—and dispel some of the myths surrounding the disorder.(**) It is aimed at the education, health and professional sectors, as well as parents so that collectively, the educational, emotional and physical needs of the individual can be met. Self criticism is often associated with the disorder and so ADHD awareness month looks to encourage people to recognise that the disorder does not define a person and that they can contribute positively in creative and innovative ways.
Those that have ADHD are more likely to experience a mental health problem and there is evidence to show that anxiety, depression, sleep problems, substance abuse and aggressive behaviour have all been shown to be more common in those with the disorder.(***) The impulsive, bold and chaotic behaviours typical of ADHD can make everyday life exhausting and stressful.
