Postnatal Depression is a type of depression that many parents experience after having a baby. It’s a common issue, affecting more than 1 in every 10 women within a year of giving birth. It can also affect 1 in every 10 new dads. Postnatal depression is often called the “baby blues”, which generally shouldn’t last longer than 2 weeks. If symptoms last longer than this it could be a sign that someone is suffering with postnatal depression. It is so common that this is often considered normal.

Symptoms of postnatal depression can include:-**

  • Difficulty bonding with your baby
  • Lack of energy
  • Difficulties concentrating and making decisions
  • Frightening thoughts
  • Lack of enjoyment
  • Feeling sad, hopeless or overwhelmed
  • Withdrawing from friends and family

Self-care for postnatal depression

Be kind to yourself.

You might have many expectations for yourself as a parent, but none of us can meet all our expectations all the time. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t do something you planned to, or if you find yourself feeling worse again. Try to treat yourself as you would treat a friend, and be kind to yourself.

How can other people help?

Spending relaxed time with those suffering from postnatal depression can be of great help. Just having some company while getting on with daily tasks and looking after their baby can help them feel less isolated. If your friend or family member is struggling with their mental health, it can make a big difference if they feel that you’re thinking of them.

Your loved one may feel guilty if they don’t have lots of time to spend with other people, or if they can’t reply to messages. You could let them know that they only need to see you or respond to you whenever they feel able. Or simply send them a message to tell them that you are thinking of them, but that they don’t need to send a response. *
