What is Domestic Abuse?
Domestic abuse is an incident/number of incidents of controlling, threatening, and violent behaviour, including sexual violence. In the vast majority of cases it is experienced by women and is perpetrated by men, particularly in relationships. Often it is linked to the history of societal inequality between men and women.*
Effects of Domestic Abuse
There are many common physical effects that can occur due to domestic abuse. These include:
- Red or purple marks at the neck
- Sprained or broken wrists
- Trouble sleeping
- Changes to eating pattern/diet
- Sexual dysfunction
- Menstrual cycle or fertility issues in women
There are many common mental effects that can occur due to domestic abuse. These include:
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Low self-esteem
- Suicidal thoughts or attempts
- Substance abuse**
This year, raising awareness is more important than ever due to a significant increase in violence, harassment and abuse towards women during the coronavirus pandemic. There have been significant increases in calls to Domestic Abuse Helplines as well as domestic abuse killings. ***
