Coronavirus: Tips for managing your anxiety
At the moment, it is hard to escape the constant stream of news coverage about Covid-19. With daily updates of new cases, restrictions and other headlines, it is common to experience anxiety around the virus.
The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) have released some top tips for managing your anxiety about the spread of coronavirus.
The BACP is a highly respected professional body, with over 50,000 members. They asked some of their members to suggest ways we can help manage feelings of stress and anxiety in these difficult times.
- Limit how much time you spend interacting with the news, and make sure they are a credible source
- Remember it is normal to worry about something like this – don’t ignore your anxiety.
- Recognise catastrophising – try not to focus on the what-ifs and concentrate on what you actually know
- Prioritise self-care – cook your favourite meal or make time for a hobby
- Practice mindfulness – mindfulness is a proven psychological technique which can help manage anxiety symptoms, there are many on line resources
- Ask for support – this could be from a friend or family, or a qualified professional
Because of the coronavirus outbreak, our normal routines may be disrupted and activities we enjoy may have been put on hold. But by following some of these simple tips, it can help us remember that this situation is temporary.
